Our favourite thing about the festive season is entertaining our friends and family at home on the island. Sharing food with our loved ones is the most rewarding parts of what we do. Something as simple as offering one of our crab claws or a roasted langoustine to a friend or neighbour truly encapsulates the spirit of Christmas for us. Our shellfish products not only taste delicious, they are full of nutrients and make a great talking point. And as host, you will know you have chosen the very best shellfish, sourced from the pristine, crystal clear waters surrounding the Outer Hebrides.
This will be our second year eschewing the traditional turkey on Christmas Day and replacing it with roasted organic rib of beef. It’s so succulent, and so tender that it just falls off the bone. The herd of Highland cattle we source from is very small. The cows live almost completely undisturbed on a remote, uninhabited island called Vallay, just of the north coast of Uist, enjoying a diet of rich machair grass that imbues the meat with a unique flavour. We like to call it a ‘true taste of the Hebrides’!
We still haven’t decided what to serve on Boxing Day but it’s been narrowed down to either roasting an organic lamb shoulder or going for the more adventurous option on a Massaman curry made using our diced organic venison. I suspect we will go for the latter as our new venison products are still so very exciting to us. And this recipe, created by our wonderful development chef, is definitely worth sharing with our extended family.
Living on an island, in a small community, there are always people dropping by to say hello, especially as we’re on the mainland for most of the year now. If I haven’t got time to rustle up a meal – there are lots of recipe inspirations on our website – there’s nothing nicer than offering unexpected guests a hearty, warming bowl of soup. So we make sure the family fridge is well-stocked at this time of year, ready for drop-ins, or just for when we don’t fancy cooking! Our soups are made using exactly the same ingredients as we sell in our shop: 100% real ingredients with proper provenance.
Thank you for reading and we hope you all have a lovely festive season and eat well. Merry Christmas!
